Everyone has their respective duties in the job environment. Every worker including the owners of firms are guided by their ethics as it relates to how they do their work. Human Resource staff are not excluded from this. They have ethics which they are meant to follow and are also expected to manage and check other employees within the organization. Human Resources is the department within the organization that carries out employment, work rate management as well as other managerial duties of staff in the organization. A recent survey which was conducted and published by the Standard Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) shows that most of HR staff feel their managers have acted unethically. It was a very extensive and broad survey that showed that most manager engage in bad behaviours that are largely considered unethical. Some examples of such behaviours include highly unethical modes of getting task done and favouritism towards certain employees. In a survey of over one thousand(1000) HR professionals, it was seen that over 28% of them felt that there was a wide difference between what the organization expected of them and their own professional judgement gotten from their years of experience.
Some said there is a need for them to compromise their professional or ethical values in order to grow at the organization. This is as a result of the nature of companies today the nature of the capitalist society. The HR professionals feel that if they don’t leave their ethical values, they may be replaced at the firm as there is always a replacement.Human resource professionals need to improve the bar and set higher standards in the works place today as current economic environment creates ethical duties that they owe their firm. This was exactly what Dr. Patel Charmi who is an outstanding figure on human resource at the prestigious Henley Business School. In his exact words, “In that sense, HR is more of an ethical steward in an organization. He also added, “In fact, HR must stay abreast of the emerging ethics issues.
This doesn’t mean just following legislation which tends to be reactive rather than proactive. It means looking at the entire social and business environment and spotting conflicts of interest and other ethics problems before they develop into full-blown scandals.” He made this statement to further buttress the point that the role of human resource staff in ethical behaviours should be at various points, from employment to managerial level who will set the ethical standards of the organization. In the survey, it was seen that many HR professionals called out areas which mainly included how they work. Last year, 44% disputed the reason behind the task they were told to do due to several reasons.
Finally, the survey discovered that there is still room for HR staff to improve their portfolio within their respective firms. Little above 50% said their jobs were respected and 58% said it added value.Though they have their concerns due to the unethical behaviours of their managers, most of them still feel that the job they do affects and builds the society positively. Most HR staffs wish that their managers would stop acting unethically.
